Great American Smokeout

Smokers across the state of Iowa are encouraged to put out their cigarettes for at least one day, and hopefully forever, as part of the Great American Smokeout on Thursday, November 19th. The American Cancer Society started the Great American Smokeout 30+ years ago to raise awareness about the dangers of smoking and the many tools available to help people quit.

3rd Annual Secondhand Smoke Event - Kirn Middle School

Kirn Middle School

This year the coalition partnered with Wings of Hope, Dr. Crawford, ENT from Boys Town and Kirn Middle School to present the sixth and eigth graders with the negative health effects of Secondhand Smoke, smoking, and tobacco use. Dr. Crawford presented the students with facts, information and pictures of patients who were undergoing surgery because of different cancers of the head and neck due to tobacco use. The students and a Q & A period in the end. We also handed out fact sheets, information on the quitting program at the Council Bluffs Community Health Center and the ACS adopt-a-smoker forms. Every student in the room showed interest in helping a smoker try to quit smoking for a day for the Great American Smoke-Out.
